Principles of Vaastu Shastra

The following are some of the principles of house making and design according to Vaastu.

1.  If you are about to by land, a plot or site, Vaastu states that sites that face the southwest, south and west directions are more advantageous than others.

2.  According to Vasstu, the most beneficial entrances in a house are those placed in northeast, east or north.

3.  A living room or dining room is best made facing east, north and northeast.

4.  The bedroom according to Vasstu should be in southwest, south or west.

5.  The children's bedroom should ideally be in northwest direction. It could also be in southeast / north / southwest or south directions as well.

6.  If you have the luxury of having a separate room for the guests, make the guestroom in northwest or northeast direction.

7.  The kitchen is ideally located in southeast followed by northwest and east directions.

8.  Bathfooms and toilets should be in the northwest, west or south direction of the house.

9.  While purchasing a plot or a site, it is advisable to go in for one that is rectangular or square in shape. As far as possible, the site should slope towards north and east or northeast directions.

10.  While making a building or house, it is advisable to have equal open spaces on all four sides. The levels of open spaces should be higher in south and west sides and lower towards north and east sides. Outlets for rainwater to flow should be in northeast or north zones.

11.  The living room of the central zone (brahmasthan) should be free form any kind of obstructions, meaning any kind of beam, pillar, staircase of dividing wall.

12.  The direction in which you sleep is also very important. One should never sleep with head facing north. Sleeping with head towards south is believed to ensure long life. While on a journey, it is advisable to sleep with head towards west.

13.  In your study room, have your seat so as to face east or north. Do not have a toilet (WC) connected to the study, although you can have a bathroom.

14.  Do not paint the study using a dark colour. Use cream or white or pink. Have the bookshelf in the east or north.

15.  If you are constructing more than one floor, prepare the first floor in the southwest direction. The height of first floor must not exceed that of the ground floor. Do not build a storeroom on first floor.

16.  Vaastu says that a storeroom in the northwest corner leads to abundant supply of essential commodities. Keep a holy picture on one eastern wall. Light colours should not be used on the storeroom. Use dark colours or blue or green. Never sleep in the storeroom at night. Also refrain from taking out grains from the storeroom at night.

17.  Bathroom (s) can be either inside or outside the house. In case it is inside, it should be located on the eastern or northern side. (If attached to a bedroom, then place it to eastern or northern side of the bedroom). When coated outside, it should be in the northeast corner, but away from the main building. Lavatories are forbidden in northeast, central, southwest and west of the house.

18.  Vaastu Shastra also guides us about what type of plants and trees should be planted around a dwelling unit so that we enjoy their positive properties the most. Vaastu does not prescribe having a mango, banana or a jamun tree very near your house. However, a peepal tree at some distance from the house in the west is considered auspicious, as is imli in the southwest of the house.

19.  It is also auspicious to have an anaar, ashoka, chandan, champa, chameli, gulaab, coconut or seshar trees around a house.

20.  on the size and shape of the doors, Vaastu advises that width of the door should be half the height of the door. Square doors, as also automatic doors should be avoided.

21.  The paintings and statues in the house are also important. One should not have pictures depicting war scenes (even if they belong to the epic Mahabharata or Ramayan battles). Similarly, avoid scenes depicting the negative aspects of life, like sorrow, struggle, violence (including that of wild beasts), tragedy and of calamities.
